The future of 3D printing in tabletop games took a step backwards today as Proxy Army announced it would be shutting down.
As the company explained in their email to subscribers of their mailing list:
Sadly, the time has come for Proxy Army Games to close its doors. While your support during our Kickstarter was outstanding, the high cost of 3D printing was just too much of a barrier for most gamers. We don’t doubt that 3D printing is the future of miniatures gaming, but we got into it a bit too early.
3D prints of the models Proxy Army developed are available on their Shapeways store. Concept artwork and illustrations can also be found on the Proxy Army DeviantArt page.
Proxy Army believed that 3D printing was the future of tabletop gaming. They ran a Kickstarter in November 2014 to launch their sci-fi tabletop wargame, as well as their 3D printed miniature service. Part of this was developing a program whereby hobbyists could construct miniatures using a kind of ‘digital bits box’. The Kickstarter was cancelled part of the way into the campaign. Alternate funding was pursued while their services and game system were developed further, until their closure was announced in April 2014.
